My Wife Practices Calligraphy

My wife practices calligraphy each morning.
Early, while the sky is still an inkstone.
Before her son rises and says he’s hungry.

My wife practices calligraphy each morning.
When the night is a crow chasing a crow forward.
Before I and the cats disturb her.

At 5 A.M., my wife holds an ink brush
able to draw Chinese characters with assurance.
She works in the Sung King’s style.

Who lost his kingdom because of literature, painting, and
writing.
Who lost his life to women and self-cultivation
to men who swung swords at their pleasure.

On rice paper, her lines are balanced,
each stroke aligned with the others,
the space where she masters relations
her own coronation.
