POEM WRITTEN WHILE LISTENING TO THE NEW MUSIC QUARTET PLAYING ALBAN BERG’S STRING QUARTET OPUS 3

the dominion of dreams
darkens decadent doorknobs
dropping drearily down —–
upon the hate-hardened noggins
of demented carnival clowns
wringing dishwater out of their frowns
in all night laundromats
in the city’s heroin district

a volunteer army of addicts
narco squad clashes with crackhead brigade
police retreat
crackheads resume occupation of tent city
demand decriminalization

PARKS AT RISK

dog walkers & buskers decry new ordinances
vandalism of surveillance cameras continues

mail-order heart attack
a crust of bread
super-glue shoe repair
muddy work boot abandon

the great not caring
reverberates above the
music of the machines
