I TOO VARESE

I too, Varese
wanted to compose
a song and setting
for Verlaine,
unlike yours,
“Un grand someil noir”,
trying at eleven
with my “Odeur de rose”
in vain about a briar
searching to propose
an earthy heaven,
but it was only a caprice
unveiled on the piano
in the key of g
in a phantom’s exigency,
with my own early
but wrong critic’s disdain,
unlike you,Varese
I gave up on my briar
about Verlaine
without a baton
for your solo piece
of music to inspire.
