SHUTTING DOWN
First,
the phone was turned off
for nonpayment,
then the natural gas went.
Luckily, it was summer.
The electricity went next,
but there were some matches
and a boxful of candles
next to the kitchen stove.
Water was the last to go.
Helga sat on the toilet
that no longer flushed,
out of toilet paper,
wondering
what would go next.
THE HOBO JUNGLE
There was an abandoned
hobo jungle
at the north end of town
when I was in high school.
There was a one room shack
next to the railroad tracks.
I looked into the shack,
which had a roof
made of corrugated tin,
each time I went there,
but it was always empty.
Sometimes I’d find
a used condom,
an empty can of beans,
a crushed pack of cigarettes.
Once, I discovered a patch
of blackened earth
where there had been a fire,
and I imagined men
sitting around it
in the moonlight.
I wanted to be a writer
so I imagined the men
telling me their stories,
but they were never there.
