Reviews of Movies I have seen from trees
How many times has the sun travelled
back and forth
across this valley cut by glaciers
one hundred thousand years ago?
How many human migrations
camped here and moved on
in the manner of birds appropriating
and relinquishing a branch?
Against the accordianed layers of cliffs
a drive-in movie screen rises like a sail
and projects the soundless fury
of Kurosawa’s Lear.
English subtitles prance across the screen,
the surf of freeway traffic dubs in the battle scenes.
A chorus of crickets overlays the headlong charge
of fire and horses across the Japanese prarie.
And sometimes the moon rolls out from clouds
and begins to write of the rise and decline of civilizations,
thinly disguised as a review.
