BETTING AGAINST THE DEVIL

It’s a mystery, really, what makes
a man bet on himself against the Devil.
He’s bound to lose, you know.
But if he doesn’t bet on himself he will
also lose.
And the Devil’s always there to take
a man’s bet.
So, it becomes a matter of how one
wants to lose.
And a matter of what is actually lost.
What can never be lost when a man
bets on himself, even against the Devil,
is his self-respect.
