Grandmother’s Face to the Sun

We put grandmother’s face
towards the sun.
She had been sitting inside
all winter.
As she faced south in the cool breeze
she went down memory lane.
She remembered when she was a child
and she thought about when
she used to watch the turtles
on the river bank, basking
in the sunshine.
She felt connected to
spring as the birds sang in nearby trees.
What stories she could tell
to future generations,
if they would only listen.
