Potato Salad Fundamentalists by Donal Mahoney

Potato Salad Fundamentalists

It boils down to this.
There are two kinds of people
in Upper Slobovia at the moment,
those who prefer hard-boiled eggs
chopped in their potato salad
and those who say chopped eggs
are a sacrilege.

Some fundamentalists say those
who prefer chopped eggs
in potato salad are infidels
who must be dragged to
the coliseum and beheaded,
their lopped heads allowed
to loll in the sun, parboil
in their own au jus.
At least for the day.

But other fundamentalists say
let the chopped-egg infidels live.
Don’t send patrols out
at midnight to round them up.
It’s better, they say, to keep
one’s sword in its scabbard.
Live and let live, they say,
in beloved Upper Slobovia.
It’s just potato salad, they say.
Their president agrees.
