Cattywampus by Sofia Kioroglou

Cattywampus

There is something unusual about this morning
The bed leans at alien angles without you
I rub the sleep off my cheeks, staring back at your side.
The covers are pulled out and cattywampus,
like you’d just crawled out of bed, but you didn’t.
You are in Hong Kong and haven’t called
I spoon sugar into my coffee and wait for that phone call
There’s a sharp squeal as the front door opens.
It is you walking in carrying a bouquet of carnations
“Happy anniversary, honey” you say and ask if I still love you
