A Spine in Need of Friends & Two other new poems by James D. Casey IV

A Spine in Need of Friends

we both see
the same thing
I’m young
I’m old

i’m there
i’m here

I’m
i’m
I
i

always
a spine
in
need
of friends
we all know

who
what
where
matters

don’t hide
come & see
it has
nothing
to do
with you

it’s me

can’t you
see
that you
need her
and you
need
me
I
eye
i

broken
healed
this is for real
love is you
love is

And Her . . .

one more cryptic text
worried I might end it
she gets off on driving
a hearse full of my dead
dreams

but

something in the way
she moves with black
cat ease
keeps me
alive

and her

razor
sharp
eyes
and

barn owl face
behind the glow
of pink cloves

and her cloven
hooves
painted
in the same shade

and
and
and

and her

It Takes Letting Go

a southern moon
is the distance
between the man
I am and the man
I used to be

but she writes
my name in the stars
still

just as I
write hers

it takes
letting go
of what we can’t
live without
to see things
clearly

a beautiful
blonde hair girl
growing up too
fast

everything
will be right
in the end
or the beginning
depending
on how you
look at it

distraction
opens my thoughts
letting demons in

a bible belt
prison cell
a murder
of the mind

I will see things
through
this time

those blue eyes
will love me
again
