LONGING
The rain fell in circlets in the puddle
Outside my window, and the light
Shone vaguely on the surface
Yellow sheen
Orange streetlights stood
Above parking lots, shining
Crucifixes in the lurid night
I knew her name and whispered
It by candlelight, so that
No one could hear me tell
Of what partook that evening
Late night reverie, a hungry
Look, that was the look
Of acceptance
Of the sway
The night held for us
Like a breath held in anticipation
Of a long awaited
Happenstance
Or a long forgotten
Thrill, that shook us from
Our sleep
And took us by the hand
Into the night until
We were swallowed in
The longing of
Remembrance
And the winter’s
Silent chill
