The Llama Races in Cherbourg
Let’s all go to the llama races in Cherbourg. If we start walking right now, tonight, we can make it, with plenty of time to spare, for post time next week. Bring your coats, leave the keys. Cigarettes, yes. Maybe a bottle of the cheapest to start out with. To hell with the umbrellas. There’s a station master in Troves I know who will let us ride the last miles. Along the way we can stop at the fire sale in Rennes, which they hold every spring. Just to soak up the atmosphere, you understand. To build up a little capital we can work a day in the vineyards. To Tours we must detour to pay a visit to the saint and leave a few coins. Back roads through Limoges will be impassable but there’s always the berm. In the fields near Clermont we’ll want to stop and look for the place your uncle, the glider pilot, touched down in the last days of the war. That old farmer put him up for a week, didn’t he? Also, we should perhaps wander a few hours out of the way to see the aqueducts at Nimes. That won’t always be possible, you know. They say a generous portion of the decorative stone has been carried away by the Gard. At all costs, too, the symphony of frogs in Poitiers, as we rest our weary feet under the stars, must be countenanced. The innkeeper in La Rochelle will be good for a wager (remittances on the way back) which he’ll entrust to our hands as his good wife, with every piece of cutlery in the kitchen at her disposal, casts a threatening glance. To Cherbourg! There’s not a moment to lose.
