The Choice Between Young And Old | Painting by Cornelius Van Haarlem (1562 – 1638)
Something in common
What we had in common was
our presumed heterosexuality …
It allowed her to enjoy
my fleeting glances at her,
glances that communicated
a subtle admiration
that she instinctively understood,
in spite of the obvious
difference in our ages …
And it allowed me to imagine
that she actually enjoyed
being the object and the subject
of my understated admiration …
Otherwise we really had
nothing in common …
The silent goodbye
As the summer slipped away
and our moments together faded,
she was more and more a muse
who had silently said goodbye …
