Buncombe for Sale by Donal Mahoney

Krispy_Kreme_DoughnutsBuncombe for Sale

Handsome is
as handsome does,
Jeanie always said,
when Donald was away
on business.

He could sell anything,
Jeanie always said,
but Donald never said
what he sold, just
different stuff that
folks ordered fast.

That’s why Jeanie had
nice furs and diamonds
Donald always said.

The other ladies
over tea and biscuits
said their husbands too
were on the road a lot.
Selling’s hard, Sylvia said.

Martha said Arthur Miller
wrote a play about
how hard selling is
and he married Marilyn.
Helen wanted to know
who Arthur Miller was.

As they played cards
that sunny afternoon,
all the ladies wished
Jeanie was with them.
Too bad, they said,
she took that plane
last week to find out
what Donald sells.

She told the ladies
she called his room
from the hotel lobby.
A woman answered
and told her Donald
had gone out to buy
a dozen Krispy Kremes.

Handsome is
as handsome does,
Jeanie always said.
