Scoot
Scoot, scoot, a mother says,
and Child looks on with the glance
Children have now, or always did.
They say Children don’t go outside
anymore to play – but here’s one
being toted around like luggage.
There’s an eruption of crying
and frustration. Normally I would
find myself on edge by this display
but it was obvious from the beginning.
I want to join in, lay on the floor,
kick for my toy.
I resist.
Mother looks at her long list, thinking
probably that this will be a long
afternoon, and they scoot on,
all tears and elaborate errands.
