in the pediatric intensive care unit one day after Ayler’s spinal fusion surgery

the boy is restless
despite the morphine
& atavan in his IV
he describes his hallucinations
to me in detail
he is having fun,
making the best
of a bad situation
& enjoying
the benzo-opiate cocktail
might as well
later on he wakes me up
startled
wants me to prop
a pillow behind his back

I’m driving a tank, he says,
I’m in a war zone.
Hurry up!
People are depending
on me!
