TIME AND AGAIN

I know you didn’t mean what you said
Before, as we waited out front
Of that old store

I know, for example
How it hurts inside, when you think back
To where we used to be
A different time and place
That almost swallowed us up
It seems silly to think back on it now
Having come this far
To look back
Would almost mean
Betrayal to the way things are
Now, in one way or another
I find you clinging to my sleeve
Don’t go, you say, and want to know
When I am going to leave
And how far I will travel

But what can I say
But into the darkness
Into the light of day
